About the Craftsman
Our story began thirty years ago when we decided to build a home. We were not far into this adventure before our hearts were pulled toward designing a cabin made from logs, old timbers and stone. Upon moving in, to our surprise, our furniture and the cabin did not get along. Our beloved Victorian antiques were misfits for the more rugged look we created. We knew we had to start over, but we were out of money so my wife became an antique dealer and sold it all.
Two things happened during this period. I repaired, rebuilt, and altered hundreds of pieces of furniture for my wife’s business, all the time admiring their construction, design and history. At the same time, we were reading about the historical Great Camps in the mountains of upstate New York, and then we had the good fortune of visiting and hearing many stories first hand. While there, we fell in love with this back-to-nature era which built and decorated their furnishings from all that the surrounding forests provided them. The functional artistry continues to amaze us.
Our appetite and passion continued to grow for these unique furnishings and we wanted more, so we headed to the Western Design Conference in Wyoming, exposing ourselves to many more artists and creative furnishings influenced by their own locale, and history, which was often compatible with Adirondack style.
The next part is a little harder to explain, but everything started morphing together. Carvings and paintings found their way onto old ammo cases, an old sauna door-turned-table ended up in a west metro restaurant. Two old fishing boats turned-into-beds were bought; one for the downtown Minneapolis Ralph Lauren display window, and the other for a cabin at the Famous Dave resort in Wisconsin. A whimsical, woodsy hutch went to the display window for a Winnie the Pooh store in NYC. An Indian oil panting we uniquely designed and framed over a long period caught the eye of a couple hunting for furnishings for their timber frame home in Red Lodge, Montana, and off it went. All this to say we were starting to see that there seemed to be a certain clientele that liked what we were doing.
So in 2022, we officially formed Stone Barn Studio. It will always be our honor serving our customer. Our goal is to build furniture that is the favorite piece in your home, that has more value in the future than it does the day you bought it. We are thinking of our customer when we hunt and eventually find a unique branch, stone or something of antiquity that can be used for a project. The process of finding the unique materials for our designs is a deep joy that inspires the creative process. To furnish a piece that a customer loves is pure joy, but to create something they have to have is the most satisfying accomplishment of all.
